Mr. Atwood is the founder of Flagstaff Design & Construction, Inc. and has led the firm from April of 1972 to the present.

Tom Atwood began his company with the development of Walker Heights Subdivision in Flagstaff. Walker Heights was built-out by the fall of 1973. He then built twenty-four custom and spec homes, several of apartment projects and a myriad of remodeling jobs.

In 1976, his emphasis shifted to commercial projects, beginning with the Flagstaff Animal Hospital. He then acquired the accounts of Allstate Insurance, Mountain Bell and El Paso Natural Gas Company as a Contractor of Record on a time and material basis.

In the fall of 1978, Mr. Atwood was named the authorized Butler dealer for Coconino County by Butler Manufacturing Company of Kansas City. Since this time, Flagstaff Design & Construction, Inc. has constructed hundreds of thousands of square feet of pre-engineered metal buildings throughout Northern Arizona. He currently represents Nucor Building Systems.

He also has a strong engineering background, which enables him to make sound judgments as to field problems and field design solutions. Before the initiation of Flagstaff Design, Mr. Atwood was a Design Draftsman for the City of Flagstaff and the City of Tempe. He engineered water, sewer, and paving projects for construction by city forces and competitive bidders. He also handled the construction staking and acted as Public Works Inspector and Right-of-Way Agent. Some of his design projects received recognition from the National Symposium on Park, Recreation and Environmental Design, as well as the trade publication, Arizona Engineer & Contractor.

He has completed two years of college level instruction in Engineering, Math and Problems. Some of the additional coursework completed includes: instruction from the American Right-of-Way Association, Course 1; Fails Management Institute seminars on job pricing, construction management and job cost control; Butler Manufacturing courses in steel erection; college level instruction on the application of the Uniform Building Code and electrical construction wiring. He has also taken management seminars including "Tom Peter's - In Search of Excellence". Mr. Atwood holds certification as General/Engineering Contractor in Arizona.

Mr. Atwood's civic involvement includes two terms on the Flagstaff Planning & Zoning Commission, with one term as chairman. Agenda items ranged from the Growth Management Guide 2000 completion to the implementation of a new land Development Code and landscaping ordinance. He has served on the City Water Commission and the Board of Directors for the Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce. Tom has served as Secretary, Vice Chairman, and Chairman of the Greater Flagstaff Economic Commission. He was appointed to Governing Board of Coconino Community College, and then elected for a six year term. He is currently serving on the boards of Greater Flagstaff Economic Council and Goodwill Industries.
