ProjectIgloo Modifications
Navajo Army Depot
Bellemont, Arizona
OwnerUSPFO for Arizona
SuperintendentDavid Babcock
Completion DateSeptember 1993

Due to this area being a military reservation, no photographs were permitted. In place of pictorial information, the following narrative will describe this unusual and challenging job.

The project consisted of standard modifications to forty-two ammunition storage igloos at the Navajo Depot. The work included removing and replacing earth cover over the igloos; providing waterproofing, insulation, and shotcrete; applying concrete topping on the existing floors; bullet proof doors; electrical and mechanical systems.

The work had to be completed during a very adverse winter. An inflexible schedule had to be maintained in order to accommodate the delivery of Minuteman rocket motors for storage. The delivery of the rocket motors was dictated by the provisions of the START Treaty which had mandated the dismantling of some of the United States' anti-ballistic arsenal.

The project was completed ahead of schedule in September 1993.
